Russia declares emergency on Tsunami-hit Kuril Islands

Moscow, July 30 (UNI) In Russia’s far eastern Sakhalin region, authorities have declared a state of emergency in the northern Kuril Islands, where tsunami waves have caused flooding and damaged coastal infrastructure.
“A state of emergency has been declared in the North Kuril district, where an earthquake and tsunami occurred today,” Al Jazeera quoted the Sakhalin government as saying in a statement.
One of the world’s strongest earthquakes struck Russia’s Far East early today, an 8.8-magnitude tremor that triggered a tsunami across the northern Pacific region and prompted warnings for Alaska, Hawaii, and other coastlines extending south towards New Zealand.
