Moscow-Prague relations hit rock bottom amid diplomatic spat : EU Expert

Brussels, Apr 24 (Sputnik), Luc Rivet Although the diplomatic row between Russia and the Czech Republic over the 2014 explosion at an ammunition depot in Vrbetice gravely harmed bilateral relations, diplomatic ties between the two countries were not entirely severed, Pierre Vercauteren, a political sciences professor at UCLouvain University in Belgium, told Sputnik.
On April 17, Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis said that the country's authorities suspected Russian intelligence services of involvement in the 2014 incident. The Kremlin called these accusations outrageous and unfounded. Eighteen Russian diplomats, however, were expelled from Prague. In response, Moscow declared 20 employees of the Czech Embassy personae non grata.
"We have probably reached the lowest point of the present crisis," Vercauteren told Sputnik, adding that "the diplomatic crisis between the Czech Republic and Russia may worsen even more, but both countries understand that cutting all diplomatic ties is not a solution, so the tit-for-tat reduction of embassy personnel will very probably stop after the last mutual reduction of staff, both in Prague and Moscow."
