Tokyo, Sep 29 (UNI) Japan Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga on Tuesday spoke to the Russian President Vladimir Putin for the first time after his appointment, Japanese media reported on Tuesday.
According to Kyodo news agency, Suga and Putin were expected to confirm commitment to continuing talks on the peace treaty between the countries, and to agree to boost economic cooperation.
However, the two powerful nations have been unable to sign a peace treaty 75 years after the end of World War II due to a dispute over the sovereignty of Russian-held islands off Hokkaido.
