Hong Kong, Jul 30 (UNI) Hong Kong authorities on Thursday disqualified 12 pro-democracy candidates from standing in the upcoming elections, further deepening political tensions and divisions in the Chinese territory, a BBC report said.
Opposition legislators had hoped to obtain a majority in the Legislative Council (LegCo) in September's election after Beijing imposed a highly controversial national security law.
When asked on what grounds were these people prevented from standing in the election, the government said " The candidates were not fit to run for office, adding they could not be considered to be abiding by the constitutional duty required of lawmakers if they, advocated for; or promoted Hong Kong's independence
