Top German court rules Covid-19 ‘emergency brake’ curbs lawful

Berlin, Nov 30 (UNI/Sputnik) Germany's federal constitutional court on Tuesday upheld a range of curbs imposed on public life during the third wave of the pandemic in spring to limit the spread of the coronavirus.
Germans filed hundreds of lawsuits against the so called "emergency brake" rules, which imposed nighttime curfews, contact restrictions and school closures in any area where the seven-day incidence topped 100 cases per 100,000 residents for three straight days. The measure was in effect for more than two months starting April 23.
The Karlsruhe-based top court admitted that the disputed exit and contact restrictions "significantly interfered with different constitutional rights" but it said that the curbs served the task of "protecting lives and well-being and maintaining a functioning health care system."
