Covid : Japan registers record 186,250 cases in a day

Tokyo, July 21 (UNI/Sputnik) Japan has registered 186,246 COVID-19 cases within the past 24 hours, the highest daily figure since the outbreak of the pandemic, Japanese broadcaster NHK reported on Thursday.
In 35 out of 47 Japanese prefectures a record daily tally has been established. Tokyo prefecture confirmed 31,878 new cases. It is the first time the capital sees over 30,000 cases in one day.
The previous daily COVID-19 cases record in Japan was reached on July 20, when the number of daily cases exceeded 150,000. Health experts attribute the drastic increase in the number of cases to the rapid spread of a new coronavirus strain, Omicron BA.5.
