Moscow, Sep 26 (UNI) Russia has sent a protest note complete with letters to the Canadian leadership for inviting and honoring in parliament a Ukrainian Nazi veteran, however, has it has not yet received a response, Russian Ambassador in Ottawa Oleg Stepanov told Sputnik on Tuesday.
"The note was sent on Monday. I sent it with my personal letters addressed to the prime minister, the foreign minister and the speaker of the House of Commons," Stepanov said. "No answer yet."
Earlier on Tuesday, Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly said House of Commons Speaker Anthony Rota should step down for inviting Ukrainian Nazi veteran Yaroslav Hunka to parliament. Joly added there would be no other alternative to Rota resigning from his position and would be the right thing to do.
Stepanov said the Canadian society and media are "buzzing" over the scandal, but Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has not apologized despite his reputation and that of his cabinet having suffered a serious blow.
"They are trying to quell the scandal by making the House of Commons Speaker Anthony Rota a scapegoat and dismissing him," Stepanov added.
