Rain Fury: 32 killed in landslides in Raigad dist

Mumbai/Raigarh, Jul 23 ( UNI) At least 32 people have been killed in two landslides triggered by incessant and heavy rains in and around Mahad tehsil of Maharashtra's Raigarh district, officials said here.

So far, 25 bodies have been recovered by the National Disaster Response Force(NDRF) team along with local authorities.

Raigad District Collector Nidhi Choudhary rushed to the spot.
According to officials, 35 people are suspected to be trapped in the landslide which occurred last evening.
The district officials said that while 28 deaths were reported from Talai, four others lost their lives Sakhar Sutar Wadi. At least 28 people are still trapped," Ms Choudhary said.

State Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray is reviewed the situation. "Landslides were triggered by heavy rainfall in many places and flooded rivers," he told the media.
He said that the dams and rivers are overflowing forcing release of water from dams. However, people residing near the river banks are being moved to safer places.
“All possible relief is being extended,” the Chief Minister said.
Meanwhile, Relief and Rehabilitation Minister Vijay Wadettiwar said in the state more than 40 to 45 people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents. “The toll is likely to go up,” he said.
The three big rivers of Western Maharashtra Panchganga in Kolhapur, Krishna in Sangli and Koyana in Satara -- are flowing above the danger mark in several areas.
Traffic on the Mumbai-Goa and Pune-Bengaluru highways have been badly affected because of the incessant rainfall, waterlogging and damage to the roads.
Around 5,000 to 6,000 people were reportedly stranded in Chiplun in Ratnagiri district and Mahad and Raigad district as of this morning.
