Agartala, May 20 (UNI) Two persons, including a student of Class X, died in landslide in Tripura on Sunday early morning while three others of two families were injured.
According to report, a young girl Mary Kaipeng (17) died on the spot in a landslide caused by heavy rain in Dhanlekha Kaipengpara under Taidu of Amarpur in Gomati district early morning.
Police said Mary was sleeping along with her parents Subrailen Kaipeng (45) and Tripurihoi Kaipeng (40) inside their mud wall house.
The house collapsed due to heavy rain that continued through the night.
Mary died on the spot as the heavy load of mud along with iron beam fell directly on her.
In another incident,a housewife Bishuham Rupini of Champabari in Jirania of West Tripura and her husband got injured when their house collapsed under the impact of incessant rains.
The state government announced Rs 5 lakh ex gratia payment to next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured. An amount of Rs 95000 would be given for house damage.
With the two deaths, the total death toll of Tripura in pre-monsoon shower and thunder storm rose to 14 and number of injured persons rose to 24 so far. The state government provided Rs 5 lakh for each of the victim
The heavy shower in the Atharamura and Baramura hills of West Tripura has triggered flash flood in the district since this morning. Besides national highway, railway tracks in several places were inundated, disrupting surface transport link with Agartala.
In Agartala, administration has set up 12 relief camps in different parts of the city for about 5000 families rendered homeless. Over 550 families were rescued so far. An alert has also been sounded, as River Howrah touched the danger mark.
The heavy rainfall since Saturday created havoc in the city throwing the lives of the people out of gear. The administrative officials visited some rain affected areas and made assessments for future measures to check inundation.
The regional office of Meteorological department has issued warning with prediction of more rainfall in the next 24 hours urging precautionary measures. Incessant overnight rain, which started last night, left adjoining areas of river Howrah waterlogged while many areas were flooded. The office said that the city would receive moderate to heavy downpour throughout the day due to movement of moistures from Bay of Bengal.
The NRDF, TSR, civil defense volunteers along with disaster management teams are on high alert and concurrently rescue operation is being continued in all adjoining areas of River Howrah.
