Rail service remain suspended in Kashmir for security reasons

Srinagar, Nov 19 (UNI) Train service remained suspended for the second day on Sunday for security reasons in the Kashmir valley, where separatists have called for a general strike against the killing of militants and Cordoned and Search Operation (CASO).

We have not operated any train today also, a senior railway official told UNI.

He said a fresh advisory was received from the administration and police on Saturday night directing not to resume train service.

Therefore, he said, no train will chug on Srinagar-Badgam in central Kashmir to Baramulla in north for the second day today.

No train will also run from Badgam-Srinagar to Anantnag-Qazigund in south Kashmir to Banihal in Jammu region.

He said train service will be resumed only after getting green signal from police.

We cannot help passengers as we have to act as per the directions by police for the security and safety of travelers and rail property, he added.

Both the factions of the Hurriyat Conference (HC) and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), spearheading the agitation, demanding right to self determination, have called for a general strike on Sunday in the valley, where six Lashkher-e-Toiba (LeT) militants, including top commanders and nephew of 2008 Mumbai terror attack mastermind Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi were killed in an encounter with security forces at Hajin in Bandipora during CASO on Saturday.

Railway has become a very popular in the Kashmir valley, which is cheap, safe and fast against other mode of transport.

Train service remained suspended during strikes and encounters between militants and security forces in the Kashmir valley for security reasons.
