Kashmir highway reopens, traffic to ply from Jammu to Srinagar

Srinagar, Dec 14 (UNI) The 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the only road connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, reopened on Thursday after remaining closed for three days due to snowfall and landslides.
Meanwhile, the historic Mughal road and highway, linking Ladakh with Kashmir remained closed.
Today traffic will ply from Jammu to Srinagar and no vehicle will be allowed from opposite direction, a traffic police official told UNI this morning.
Traffic on the highway was suspended on Monday afternoon following snowfall on this side of the Jawahar tunnel and landslides, triggered by rain, between Ramban and Ramsu.
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintainance of the highway put into service sophisticated machines and men to put through the highway. However, continued snowfall and landslides hampered the operation to resume traffic. Later stranded vehicles at Banihal were allowed to move towards Kashmir valley after snow was removed on the road.
Traffic police official said that landslides at several places have been removed. We allowed stranded vehicles on other side of the tunnel to move towards Kashmir valley from 0400 hrs today, he said adding fresh vehicles were also allowed from Jammu. However, the Kashmir bound heavy vehicles will have to pass Udhampur before 1100 hrs.
Traffic on the 86-km-long Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region remained closed for the fourth day today as about three to four feet of snow had accumulated at several places.
