Kolkata, Mar 10 (UNI) The net increase in the annual income of farmers has increased from Rs 91,011 during financial year (FY) 2010-11 to Rs 2,39,000 during FY 2016-17, a doubling of income or an increase of 262.74 per cent.
The expected production of foodgrains and rice will be around 184.23 lakh metric tonnes (MT) and 161.84 lakh MT, respectively, during 2017-18.
The System of Rice Intensification (SRI) has been adopted to increase the production of rice at low cost.
The state has been able to increase the area of production of aromatic rice varieties like Gobindobhog and Tulaipanji.
The State Government has also attached importance on the production of pulses. The estimated production during 2017-18 has been 4.63 lakh MT while for 2018-19, the target has been fixed at 4.75 lakh MT.
The department has taken several initiatives to improve the overall economy of state-run farms and to attain self-sufficiency in quality seed production.
The farms will engage contractual, daily and piece-rated workers to ensure maximum coverage of the net cultivable area under them.
