New Delhi, Jul 31 (UNI) The Sports Ministry on Friday announced a 12-member selection committee, which includes eminent names like former India cricketer Virender Sehwag and hockey stalwart Sardar Singh, to select winners for the National Sports Awards 2020.
The ministry has opted for a single selection committee to pick the awardees among both athletes and coaches like the previous year.
Retired Supreme Court Justice Mukundakam Sharma is the Chairperson of the Committee.
Apart from Sehwag and Singh, the other members of the committee include Monalisa Baruah Mehta (Table Tennis), Deepa Malik (Para-athletics), Venkatesan Devarajan (Boxing) as well as sports commentator Manish Batavia and sports journalists Alok Sinha and Neeru Bhatia.
Meanwhile, the officials from the Sports Ministry on the committee include, Director General, SAI, Shri Sandip Pradhan, LS Singh, Joint Secretary (Sports Development) and Commander Rajesh Rajagopalan, CEO, Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS).
Two additional members who have been Dronacharya Awardees may be invited by the Chairperson while considering the nomination for Dronacharya Award.
The national sports awards are given away every year on August 29, the birth anniversary of hockey icon Dhyan Chand. However, this year the awards function might get delayed due to ongoing pandemic but a final decision regarding the matter is still awaited.
