IPL10: Punjab beat GL by 26 runs

Rajkot, Apr 23 (UNI) Hashim Amla's knock of 65 and excellent bowling spell by Kings X1 helped them towards victory against Gujarat Lions beating the hosts by 26 runs in the IPL10 at the Saurashtra Cricket Association stadium here this evening. With this win Kings X1 have three wins in this match. Earlier, Gujarat Lions won the toss and opted to field putting Kings X1 to bat. Batting first Punjab put a target of 188 runs before the hosts in reply Gujarat were restricted to 162/7 winning by 26 runs. After seven matches this is Punjab's third victory with six points they have climbed to 4th spot in the points table while Gujarat from their seven matches have lost for the fifth time with 4 points are at the bottom of the table. Chasing a target of 189 runs by the Punjab for the first wicket partnership McCullum (6) and Finch (0) added only 6 runs, but in the very first over GL received a major jolt when McCullum went for lbw in Sandeep Sharma's spell for a mere score of 6 runs. Even though Karthik and Raina tried to steer away their team towards victory Raina (32) lost his wicket to Axar Patel while Karthik (58) remained unbeaten till the end, but For Gujarat Lions wickets kept falling at regular intervals which diminshed their hopes of remaining alive in the match. For Kings X1 Sandeep Sharma, Cariappa and Axar Patel claimed two wickets each while Mohit Sharma bagged one wicket. The Kings X1 started on a good note, but lost its first wicket of Vohra in the 2nd over to Nathu Singh for a mere score of 2 after a superb catch from Karthik behind the stumps. After this for the for the 2nd wicket partnership Marsh (30) and Amla (36) added a crucial 70 runs. Amla with dazzling his shots punched Kings X1 bowlers towards the boundaries several times But in the 10th over Marsh was caught off by Raina in Tye's slow ball trying to loop over to midwicket. For the third wicket partnership Amla (20) and Maxwell (27) added 47 runs. However, Amla was caught and bowled by debutant Shubham Agarwal in the 14th over at score of 65 off 40 deliveries hitting 9 fours and two sixes. After Amla's dismissal Maxwell too lost his wicket in the 15th over to Jadega looking to reverse sweep, but the ball hitting his thigh went for lbw. Maxwell scored 31 off 18 deliveries hitting 1 four and 3 sixes. However, Stoinis (7), Axar Patel (34), Saha (10). Sharma remained unbeaten at 4. For the second wicket partnership between Finch (13) and Raina (27) added a useful 40 runs. But, in the 6th over dangerman Finch too throwed his wicket at score of 13 after being caught off to a low catch by Stoinis in Mohit Sharma's bowl to which the umpires reamin doubtful, but later on after confirmation Finch walked towards the pavillion. Finch's 13 came off in 12 balls hitting only one six. Skipper Suresh Raina was caught off in the 9th over a fine catch right on the edge of the boundary by Maxwell in Axar Patel's spell. Raina added 32 off 24 deliveries hitting 4 fours. Jadeja was caught and bold by Cariappa in te 12th over for 9 off 7 balls hitting one four. For the sixth wicket partnership between Tye (22) and Karthik (12) stiched 35 runs, but was bowled by Sandeep Sharma's yorker toppling the middle stump in the 17th over. Tye's 22 came off in 12balls hitting 2 fours and a six. Even though Karthik and Raina tried to steer away their team towards victory Raina (32) lost his wicket to Axar Patel while Karthik (58) remained unbeaten till the end, but For Gujarat Lions wickets kept falling at regular intervals which diminshed their hopes of remaining alive in the match. However, after Jadeja's dismissal lower order batsman couldn't contribute much with the bat Smith (4), Nath's (0), except for Tye who scored a useful (22). However, Thampi (11) and Raina (58) remained unbeaten till the end before they lost to Kings X1 by 26 runs. For Gujarat Lions all-rounder and spinner Shubham Agarwal the day was special making his debutant took his first in the IPL that too of Hashim Amla in the 14th over. However, Tye's 2/35 restricted Kings X1 to 188/7. Nathu Singh, Jadeja and Smith chipped one wickets each. UNI XC NC JW2036
