Eng 16/1 at lunch in reply to India's 416

Birmingham, July 2 (UNI) Ravindra Jadeja's century and skipper Jasprit Bumrah's counter-punch helped India reach 416 against England in the first innings on Day 2 of the delayed fifth Test at Edgbaston here on Saturday.
In reply, England were 16 for 1 after the umpires called for an early lunch break due to rain. The hosts trail India by 400 runs.
Bumrah drew first blood off a lovely length ball directed at the stumps of Alex Lees (6) who missed on his defence. The ball sneaked through and deflected off his pad and rattled the timber behind.
Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope are at the crease batting on 7 and naught, respectively.
Shy of 17 runs overnight, Jadeja notched up his awaited milestone (104) just minutes ahead of the half-an-hour mark.
Following suit, Bumrah (31 no off 16 balls) got into the act and created a world record of smashing 35 runs in a Test match off Stuart Broad, surpassing the previous in the hands of Brian Lara, George Bailey and Keshav Maharaj.
It was only third Test hundred, and surely Jadeja's best as he had walked in to bat when India were in peril with just 98 runs on board with five wickets down on Day 1.
The bowling-allrounder hit his first Test hundred in 2018 and since then he has scored 1,324 runs at an average of 49, just behind Rohit Sharma who has better average in this period.
Jadeja stitched a 222-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Rishabh Pant who cracked 111 balls 146 runs to bail India out of the woods.
The only glitch in his knock was when he flayed outside off-stump to Mathew Potts and nicked it, but the ball brushed Zak Crawley's fingertips and sailed for a boundary.
England folded India's first innings in 11.5 overs by picking up the remaining three wickets, but leaked 78 far too many runs.
Jadeja and Mohammad Shami began the Day 2 proceedings slowly before the centurion played a few shots to get going.
Jadeja was cleaned up by James Anderson for 104 just before the second new ball, leaving India at 375 for 8. England believed that they would run through and restrict India below 400-mark, but Broad leaked 35 in an over, taking India past 400 runs.
For England, the star bowler was Anderson who finished with figures of 5 for 60 runs and Potts 2 for 105.
Brief scores: India 416 in 84.5 overs (Rishabh Pant 146, Ravindra Jadeja 104; James Anderson 5/60, Matthew Potts 2/105) against England 16/1.
