Athletic Club Bilbao left back Yuri signs 2-year contract extension

Athletic Club Bilbao left back Yuri signs 2-year contract extension

Madrid, Oct 5 (UNI/Xinhua) Athletic Club Bilbao on Tuesday confirmed that left back Yuri Berchiche has signed a new contract until the end of June 2024.

The new deal ends worries that the 31-year-old, who joined Athletic from Paris Saint Germain in the summer of 2018, could leave the club at the end of the current season when his previous deal was due to expire.

The defender's new contract does not include a release clause, which means that any club wishing to buy him would have to negotiate with Athletic.

"I want to thank the club and the fans for four years full of emotions," said the player whose goal qualified Athletic for the final of the 2020 Copa del Rey, which was eventually played in April 2021.

"From the first moment, I have felt loved here and I am happy to extend my contract for two more years. I am at home here and we have things that we still have to do."

The left back has made 106 appearances for Athletic since his arrival, scoring nine goals and as well as his defensive duties, his ability to push forward is a key part of the Basque outfit's attacking play.

Yuri is putting the finishing touches to his recovery from an operation he underwent at the end of July in order to cure a long-standing pelvic injury and he should be fit to return at the end of October or in early November.
