Puducherry, Nov 26 (UNI) The Puducherry administration would seek an interim relief of Rs 50 crore from the Union Government to provide relief to those affected in the Nivar cyclone, the Union Territory Chief Minister V Narayanasamy said on Thursday.
Talking to news persons here, Mr Narayanasamy said that the loss is being estimated and as per the first assessment, the total damages could be to the tune of Rs 400 crores. As per the initial assessments, paddy in 820 hectares of land was lost, vegetable in 700 hectares, sugarcane in 170 hectares, plantain in 55 hectares and Betel leaves in seven hectares were lost. Apart from this, roads and fishing boats were also damaged, the CM said.
The Chief Minister said that relief works were taken on a war footing and 95 per cent of the water was pumped out from the water logged areas and 90 per cent power was restored. No loss of life was reported there in the cyclone and Puducherry received 23 Cms rainfall and Karaikal ten CMs of rainfall in a single day.
