Hyderabad, Nov 18 (UNI) The second and last partial Lunar Eclipse of 2021 will be visible in India on Friday.
Across the world, this eclipse will be visible in the region covering Western Africa, Western Europe, North America, South America, Asia, Australasia, Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.
Planetary Society of India (PSI) Director N Sri Raghunandan Kumar told UNI on Thursday that this eclipse in various phases begins at 11.30 am tomorrow and ends at 5.35 p.m. The noticeable Umbral phase begins at 12.48 hours and complete at 4.17 p.m.
Though astronomically speaking, Mr Kumar said, the Eclipse begins at 11.30 am. with moon entering lighter Shadow of Earth called Penumbra and ends at 5.35 p.m leaving Penumbra.
People across the world noticeably would witness darkening (or leaving) of Moon’s disk by Earth Shadow in Umbral phase between 12.48 hours to 4.17 p.m. that is 3 hours 28 Minutes and 23 Seconds.
He said It’s a fact that a Lunar Eclipse occurs when Moon passes through the shadow of Earth. On November 21, at 7.42 a.m. moon will reach the farthest point in its orbit called Apogee. So Eclipse of Moon on November 19 occurs 41 hours before Earth reaching Apogee.
The PSI Director said Moon on November 19 is farther away from Earth. Being Farther away, moon will travel slower along its orbit than at Perigee causing longest eclipse. In other words Moon reaching apogee point takes longer to pass through Earth’s shadow making Partial Eclipse of Moon on Friday as longest.
Eclipse occur in India. Visibility only in few parts of Assam & Arunachal Pradesh?
Moon rises around 4.24 p.m. in Assam & Arunachal Pradesh whereas rest of the country Moon rises late. For example like most of the states Moon Rises at 5.43 p.m. in Hyderabad tomorrow, though Eclipse of Moon will occur in India. As Moon is not above horizon during time of eclipse, most of the people across India will miss observing it, he explained.
The next Lunar Eclipse visible from India which is Total Lunar Eclipse, will occur on November 8, 2022, he said, adding that the last lunar Eclipse visible from India occurred on May 26, 2021 which was visible in few places in India. Whereas the last opportunity to see Lunar Eclipse, by all people across India occurred on January 31, 2018 which was Total.
Mr Kumar said between year 1400 to 2700, three lengthiest “Partial” Lunar Eclipses can be noted i.e 18 February, 1440 at 3hrs 28mins 46 Sec, 19 November, 2021 at 3hrs 28mins 23 sec and on 8 February, 2669 at 3hrs 30mins 02 Secs. Which simply means the last time lengthiest “Partial” Lunar Eclipse occurred was 580 years ago in 1440. Whereas the next lengthiest “Partial” Lunar Eclipse will occur 648 years from Now i.e. in year 2669.
Explaining about Lunar Eclipse, he said a Lunar Eclipse occurs when earth in course of its orbit around sun, comes between moon and sun such a way that moon his hidden in the shadow cast by earth. This can occur only when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are aligned in a straight line. Hence lunar eclipse occurs only when there is full moon.
The Motion of Moon around Earth is not circular its Elliptical. That is reason every month during course of it journey around Earth, Moon in its orbit will be at one point it's at closest to earth (perigee) and at one point it’s at farthest point (apogee).
In recent past, social media is calling Full Moon & allied events with different names. For example, Full Moon on November 19, 2021 is Beaver Moon. It’s a fact that across the world different folk lore names full Moon with different names every month. These Folk lore names are based on seasons or astrological reasons. However scientifically speaking, natural Satellite of Earth as per International Astronomical Union (IAU) has only one name that is Moon, he added.
