“Aadi Amavasya” a low key affair in Tamil Nadu amid coronavirus lockdown

Rameswaram, Jul 20 (UNI) The sacred “Agni Theertham” (sea) in the Holy Island of Rameswaram, where lakhs of devotees usually took a holy dip before performing “Pitru Tarpanam” (Shraadh) on occasion of “Aadi Amavasya,” look deserted on Monday owing to the nation-wide Coronavirus lockdown.
Aadi Amavasya – the new moon occurring in Tamil month of “Aadi” was considered as a highly auspicious day for performing Shraadh to forefathers.
The day is very significant in Rameswaram, where over five lakh devout Hindu people from various parts of the country congregate at the seashore and perform rituals.
