Over Rs 45,000 crore collected under District Mineral Foundations

Hubballi, Mar 27 (UNI) Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Coal, Mr Prahlad Joshi said here on Saturday that as of now about Rupees 45,000 crores have been collected under the District Mineral Foundations (DMF) meant to drive developmental work in the mining-affected areas, but so far only Rupees 20,000 crores have been spent, that too outside the mining affected areas.
Speaking to newsmen here on Saturday, Mr Joshi said in view of several representations received by him followed by the recommendations made by the standing committee on Mines and Coal suggesting to have a clear cut policy on the issue, his ministry has issued certain guidelines to the state governments. Any amount given to states under the DMF are to be spent in the respective districts only, including on the National Programmes like Polio and TB eradication. If at all infrastructure is to be catered to, then the priority should be given for the mining sector and that is the stand of the Center. By and large all concerned parties have supported the government's stand, he said.
The Mines and Coal Minister regretted that despite being home for more than 95 valuable minerals, the country is importing minerals from outside including gold. We have rich gold mines in the country, but we are not exploiting the same. Comparing the geological survey estimation of gold deposits in the country, we are only mining just 1.5 percent of the total deposits. With regards to other ores, only 10 per cent is currently being mined. Under Modi government’s reign, we want to change the scenario.
