COVID-19 claims first journo in TN, Cong functionary dies, another DMK MLA test positive

Chennai, June 27 (UNI) Senior cameraperson of a private Tamil

TV channel died due to coronavirus, here this morning, while a

State Congress functionary succumbed to the virus, even as

another Opposition DMK Legislator tested positive and was

being treated at a hospital.

Cameraperson Velmurugan of Raj TV, who had tested positive for

COVID-19, succumbed at the government hospital this morning.

He was the first journalist in Tamil Nadu to succumb to corona

virus, the positive cases of which inched towards the 75,000 mark

in the State, including about 50,000 in Chennai alone, besides

causing 957 fatalities.

DMK President M K Stalin and PMK Founder Dr S Ramadoss

condoled the death of Velmurugan and appealed to the journalists,

who were in the frontline of covering the COVID-19 pandemic, to

take all precautions to safeguard themselves from the virus.

Condoling the death, the Chennai Press Club appealed to Chief

Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami to announce an assistance of

Rs 50 lakh to his family.

Club Joint Secretary Bharathi Tamizhan also urged the State

government to regularise the services of Velmurugan's wife,

who was working as a nurse in a Government hospital on

contract basis.

He also urged the government to announce a comprehensive

insurance cover for journalists who were risking their lives and

covering the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, a Congress functionary T Rajendran, who had tested

positive and was undergoing treatment at a hospital, died this

morning.

He was the third politician to succumb to the virus, after DMK

MLA J Anbazhagan and former DMK functionary Balaraman.

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) President K S Alagiri

said he was shocked to hear about the death of Rajendran, who

is the Vice-president of the party’s South Chennai unit.

In a statement, he recalled that Rajendran worked hard for the

party’s development.

“It is a great loss for the party,” he said and expressed his heartfelt

condolences to the bereaved family members.

Meanwhile, another DMK MLA tested positive for corona and was

undergoing treatment at a private hospital.

DMK MLA R D Arasu, who was elected from Cheyyur Assembly

seat in Chengalpet district, has tested positive for Covid-19.

A physician by profession, Arasu had fever a couple of days back

and when he went to hospital for treatment his swab tests returned

positive for COVID-19.

Mr Stalin, in a tweet, wished Arasu a speedy recovery and said his

self-confidence and the dedication to serve the people, besides the

treatment, would help him recover soon and return to serve the people.

He is the third legislator in the State to be infected by Covid-19, after

Anbazhagan, who succumbed later, and ruling AIADMK MLA from
