Emergence of corporates skyrockets healthcare costs in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 8 (UNI) The emergence of corporates has skyrocketed healthcare costs in Kerala, as healthcare is a capital-intensive business, said Dr. Naresh Purohit, Executive Member of the Federation of Hospital Administrators.
A drastic surge in the incidence of lifestyle diseases and the high cost of diagnostic tests, coupled with the disappearance of not-for-profit hospitals and people’s reluctance to opt for government medical institutions, have pushed Kerala’s out-of-pocket healthcare expenses to the highest among southern states, the medical expert said.
Dr. Purohit, Principal Investigator for the Indian Medical Academy for Preventive Health, pointed out that out-of-pocket expenses, including outpatient services, refer to costs that patients pay directly for medical care and are not covered by health insurance—placing a heavy financial burden on them.
