Be prepared for potential hospitalisations and ICU care amid Omicron surge: Dr Naresh Purohit

Kottayam, Jan 4 (UNI) 'Given the rapid rate of Omicron spread in the country, we will have to be prepared for potential hospitalisations and the need for ICU care,' noted Pandemic Control Expert Dr Naresh Purohit said here on Tuesday.
"It is true that the currently available scientific data indicates that the Omicron variant carries a 50-70 per cent reduced risk of hospitalisation compared to the Delta variant. But this data is not adequate to fully comprehend the virulence of the Omicron variant," the acclaimed Epidemiologist said.
"It is important to identify cases early and provide high-quality medical supervision even at the stage of moderate symptomatic illness," Dr Purohit told UNI over phone after addressing a webinar on "Battle Against Omicron Surge" organised by the Mahatama Gandhi University Medical College here.
