Excise Dept driver dies of COVID-19

Kannur, Jun 18 (UNI) A driver of the Excise department, who tested positive for COVID-19, died at Kannur Government Medical College Hospital (KGMCH), Pariyaram on Thursday.
District Medical Officer (DMO) Dr K Narayanan Naik told UNI that K P Sunil (28) of Blathur was attached with Mattanur Excise Range office.
With his death, the death toll due to COVID-19 rose to 21 in Kerala and this is the fourth one from Kannur district.
Sunil was tested positive for Coronavirus on June 16. He was having pneumonia symptoms. His health condition worsened this morning and put on ventilator.
The source of his infection has not been identified so far.
On June 3, Mattanur Excise officials arrested an accused from Karnataka in an Abkari case and they took him to District hospital for COVID test in their jeep.
The Mattannur Excise office has been temporarily closed for disinfecting and all the 18 staff of the office were sent to home quarantine.
Meanwhile, District Collector T V Subash directed to close all the shops and business establishments in Kannur town, Kannathur, Payyambalam and Thalikavu wards under the Kannur Corporation since this afternoon as a 14-year-old boy residing near Kannur town has been admitted at KGMCH after infected with Coronavirus through contact .

Kochi, Aug 13 (UNI) The Special Court for Economic Offences here on Thursday rejected the bail application filed by Swapna Suresh, one of the main accused in the gold smuggling case, terming her a 'highly influential lady.'
The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (Economic Offences) Deepu C observed that the accused had connections with higher officials at the UAE consulate even after leaving the job.
