Fashion industry responsible for 20 pc of all industrial water pollution worldwide: Zuzana Gombosova

Hyderabad, Jan 7 (UNI) Malai Biomaterials Co-founder Ms Zuzana Gombosova on Thursday said that the fashion industry is responsible for 20 per cent of all industrial water pollution worldwide.
The fashion industry is the second-largest consumer of water in the world and the industry uses the equivalent of 12, 402 Olympic swimming pools of oil each year, Zuzana said while addressing at a Knowledge Lab virtually being organised jointly by FICCI Ladies Organisation Incubation, i-TIC Foundation the Technology Business Incubator (TBI) at IIT Hyderabad and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Hyderabad) here on Sustainable Living in the New Normal: Winning Strategies for women entrepreneurs in the Jewellery and Fashion Industries.
Speaking on Sustainability and Design, Malai Biomaterials Co-founder, who shot into limelight by winning the second edition of Circular Design Challenge (CDC) at Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) last year, said that roughly 15 per cent of the total fabric used by the fashion industry is wasted. Washing clothes, meanwhile, releases 500,000 tons of micro-fibres into the ocean each year---the equivalent of 50 billion plastic bottles.
