Death toll rises to 95 in torrential rains, floods in Kerala; 59  still missing

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 14 (UNI) The death toll in torrential rains, flood and landslides rose to 95 in Kerala even as 59 people are still missing in various districts in the State since Thursday last.

Official sources on Wednesday said as many as 1,89,567 people from 58,107 families were staying in 1,118 relief camps spread across in several districts. However, several people returned to their homes after water receded at their places.

The sources said 4 people died in Alappuzha district, 2 each in Kottayam and Kasaragod districts, 5 in Idukki, 8 in Thrissur, 35 in Malappuram, 17 in Kozhikode, 12 in Wayanad, 1 in Palakkad and 9 in Kannur districts till this morning.

As many as 59 people -- 51 from Malappuram and 7 from Wayanad and 1 from Kottayam -- are still missing, the sources added.

The sources said 1,057 houses were fully damaged and 11,159 houses have been partially damaged in floods.

Meteorological Centre, Thiruvananthapuram said strong winds from northwesterly direction with speed reaching 45-55 kmph is likely along and off Kerala coast during the next 24 hours.

Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea.

Moderate to heavy rainfall with wind speed reaching 35 to 45 kmph is very likely to occur at one or two places in Malappuram, Kozhikode and Kannur districts on Wednesday.

A Red alert was issued in Malappuram and Kozhikode districts today.



Neyyar dam and Aruvikkara dam in Thiruvananthapuram were opened to discharge excess water due to heavy rains in the catchment areas.

A holiday has been declared for all the schools, colleges in the districts of Kozhikode, Thrissur, Kottayam, Kannur, Alappuzha, Wayanad, Ernakulam, Idukki and Malappuram on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, a person was arrested and 27 cases were registered against those who circulated fake news creating panic among people through social media on floods in the state till this day.

A detailed probe is being initiated by the Cyber Cell, the Cyberdom and the High-tech Cell in this regard, sources said.

About 26 tonnes of flood relief materials have been sent to the relief camps in most devastated Northern districts till Tuesday evening, the sources added.
