Death toll rises to 92, about 59 are still missing in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 13 (UNI) The death toll in rain-related incidents rose to 92 in Kerala even as 59 people are still missing, following torrential rains, floods and landslides in various districts since August eight in the state.
As many as 2,21,286 people from 67,562 families are staying in 1,206 relief camps in various districts, even as several returned to their homes after water started receding in their places, according to the official sources here on Tuesday.
Sources said 4 people died in Alappuzha district, 2 each in Kottayam and Kasaragod districts, 5 in Idukki, 8 in Thrissur, 32 in Malappuram, 17 in Kozhikode, 12 in Wayanad, 1 in Palakkad and 9 in Kannur districts till this day.
As many as 59 people - 51 from Malappuram and 7 from Wayanad and 1 from Kottayam - are still missing, it added.
Sources said 1,057 houses were fully damaged and 11,159 houses have been partially damaged in the floods.
Neyyar dam in Thiruvananthapuram was opened due to heavy rains in the catchment areas. Red alert was issued in Idukki, Alappuzha and Ernakulam districts on Tuesday, and in Malappuram and Kozhikode districts on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, a holiday has been declared for all the schools, colleges and professional colleges in 9 districts, Kozhikode, Thrissur, Kottayam, Kannur, Alappuzha, Wayanad, Ernakulam, Idukki and Malappuram on Wednesday, sources said.
Meanwhile, one person was arrested and 27 cases were registered against those who circulated fake news creating panic among people through social media on floods in the state.
A detailed probe is being initiated by the Cyber Cell, the Cyberdom and the High-tech Cell in this regard, sources said.
Meanwhile, a total of 26 tonnes of flood relief materials has been sent to the relief camps in most devastated northern districts till this evening, sources added.
Moderate to heavy rainfall with wind speed reaching 35 to 45 kmph is very likely to occur at one or two places in Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Thrissur districts on Tuesday night.
