Chennai, July 16 (UNI) Senior AIADMK leader and former Tamil Nadu Transport
Minister M R Vijayabhaskar was arrested in Kerala by the CB-CID police on
Tuesday in connection with a Rs 100 crore land grab case.
He was later brought to Karur from Kerala and was being questioned.
The AIADMK strongman in Karur, charged with grabbing 22 acres of land owned
by a businessman using forged documents, went absconding after the District
Sessions Court dismissed his anticipatory bail petition.
He then filed a similar plea in the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court which
was yet to take it up for hearing.
It was in this backdrop, the CB-CID police, which had conducted raids at his
residence and office premises in Karur and Chennai and that of his brother
and his aides recently, tracked his mobile phone signals, went to Kerala and
arrested him.
The CB-CID team which had launched a manhunt for Mr Vijayabhaskar after
his bail plea was dismissed, had even visited North India recently, following
reports that he was hiding there.
The Karur-based businessman Prakash, had on May 11 filed a complaint alleging
that Mr Vijayabhaskar and seven others had encroached and grabbed his 22 acre
land using fake documents and demanded action against them.
Acting on the complaint, the Karur Town police registered cases against seven
people under eight sections and launched a probe.
Later, cases were registered against the former Minister too under land grab
charges and the police started to trace him, leading to his arrest today.
AIADMK General Secretary and Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami
had condemned the searches at the Ex-Minister's premises and termed it as an act
of political vendetta by the ruling DMK.
