Gold Smuggling : Customs Dept issues ultimatum to 2 Airports to examine cargo and parcels

Kozhikode, Jul 18 (UNI) With the Union Home Ministry ordered investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the deeper intricacies of the seizure of 30 kgs of gold from a diplomatic baggage at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport progressing, the Customs department has recently issued an ultimatum to the Airport authorities of Thiruvananthapuram and Calicut International airports on installing scanners to examine cargo and parcels reaching the airport or face consequences including cancellation of permission to function.
With these two Airports witnessing a massive smuggling of gold from Middle East countries even in flights as part of Vande Bharat mission and in chartered flights, evading levies and taxes causing heavy loss of revenue to the exchequer, the Air Customs Intelligence had been on an extra vigil these days.
But the busting of the gold smuggling racket through the International cargo route has been something that the customs could not take without a pinch of salt.
