Total lockdown in Pondy, Karaikal regions to contain spread of Coronavirus

Puducherry, Aug 25 (UNI) In a bid to check the spread of COVID-19, the territorial administration imposed a total lockdown in Puducherry and Karaikal regions on Tuesday.
The total lockdown is in Puducherry and Karaikal regions today and for Mahe and Yanam regions it will be on Sundays as implemented by Kerala and Andhra Pradesh states respectively.
It may be noted that the COVID-19 positive cases crossed the 10,000 mark and 164 died in UT so far.
All shops and other business establishments barring milk booths, medical stores and gas agencies remained closed.
All state and central government offices, and banks also remained closed and the busy road here wore a deserted look.
With the slackening of the lockdown rules, people used to wander in roads without any valid purpose leading to the spread of the virus.
Presently over 350 cases are being reported every day following which the government has taken the decision to close down all shops by 7 PM and to impose a total lockdown on Tuesdays.
Police are on roads for security duty and are checking those coming out and the vehicles of those plying without permission are being seized and fine was imposed.
Police are not allowing people from Tamil Nadu into Puducherry in border areas of Kanniyakoil, Gorimedu, Madagadippattu and kanagachettikkulam.
Only those coming for medical treatment are allowed and others are being sent back.
