Puducherry, Nov 6 (UNI) Chief Minister N Rangaswamy on Saturday said the ten kilograms of free rice and two kg sugar, he had announced for the Diwali festival to all ration card holders in the union territory, would be distributed soon.
In an informal chat with newspersons, he said that a tender for this had been floated and it is under the consideration of the government.
Steps are being taken to fix it and distribute the commodities, Mr Rangaswamy said.
It may be noted that during the previous Congress-DMK government, cash for sugar was remitted in the bank account of the beneficiaries and the N R Congress-BJP government changed it with the consent of the Union government and took steps to provide rice and sugar through the ration shops.
Ration shops in the UT were closed for more than three years and the administration sought permission from the Centre to reopen the shops.
Recently, Lt.Governor Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan had approved the file for the same and by that time, Diwali festival was over.
