Congress, SAD attains simple majority in Uttarakhand and Punjab, leaders demand Bajwa's removal

Chandigarh/Dehradun, Apr 15 (UNI) The Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal has secured a simple majority in the Uttarakhand and Punjab Assemblies even as nominees of SS and NCP in Maharasthra and SP in Uttar Pradesh today emerged victorious in the by-election held on April 11, for which counting has taken up today.
Several Congress leaders today demanded removal of Punjab Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa for the party’s defeat in the Dhuri bye-election which was second in row under his leadership.
In a joint statement here, party leaders Pawan Dewan, Gurmail Pahalwan and others said removing him was the only option and added the more time he stays at the helm, more the party will suffer in Punjab.
SAD President and Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal today termed the victory of the SAD-BJP alliance in the Dhuri bypoll a verdict in favour of the pro-people development policies
of the state government and a complete rejection of negative campaign being run by the Congress party.
Jubilant Shiv Sena workers in Maharasthra celebrated party candidate Trupti Sawant's victory over
rival Congress heavyweight Narayan Rane in by-elections to Bandra(E) Assembly seat by bursting fire crackers and distributing sweets here.
As soon as the results are announced, the party activists including women gathered at the Gulamandi area and celebrated her win by raising slogans in favour of Sena.
Ms Trupti Sawant won the Bandra (East) by-election by a margin of 19,008 votes defeating her nearest rival and Congress senior leader Narayan Rane.
In Punjab, Ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) candidate Govind Singh Longowal won the Dhuri Assembly seat defeating his Congress supported Morcha candidate Simar Pratap Barnala by a huge margin of 37,501 votes.
SAD wrested the seat from the Congress Party. With this victory, the SAD has secured simple majority in the 117-member Punjab Assembly and its strength has risen to 59 while its alliance partner BJP had 12 legislators in the current assembly.
In the 2012 state assembly polls, the Dhuri seat was won by Congress candidate Arvind Singh Khanna who had defeated today's winner Longowal in the hustings. Mr Khanna later resigned from the seat in January this year, citing some family reasons and hence the bypoll was necessitated.
In Maharasthra, Shiv Sena candidate Trupti Sawant won the Bandra (East) by-election by a margin of 19,008 votes defeating her nearest rival and Congress senior leader Narayan Rane .
Ms Sawant polled 52,711 votes, while Mr Rane secured 33,707 votes.
At Tasgaon-Kavthi constituency, NCP candidate Suman Patil won by a margin of 1,12,963 votes defeating her nearest rival Kapil Patil, a BJP rebel candidate.
