RS adjourned for day over Gujarat MLA 'poaching' issue

New Delhi, Jul 28 (UNI) Opposition Congress and ruling BJP Members today locked horns in the Rajya Sabha demanding apology from the other side and resulting in the House being adjourned for the fifth and final time till Monday. As the House reassembled in the post-lunch session, the sloganeering by the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party Members started. Protesting against the Congress members, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi charged them with defaming Gujarat and its people and demanded an apology from the Congress. He said that free and fair elections were held in Gujarat and the Congress was in the habit of blaming others for their own defeat. He demanded expunction of the charges made during the morning session against the ruling party. "Conspiracy to defame Gujarat will not succeed and all charges must be expunged,' his voice could be heard over the din. As the Congress members claimed that the Prime Minister's office was directly responsible, the Minister could be heard demanding an apology for accusing the Prime Minister and Gujarat. By this time, 10 Congress Members entered the Well of the House and indulged in slogan shouting with BJP Members who were gathered near the Well. Deputy Chairman PJ Kurien, pleading helplessness at the cross shouting, warned that if both sides continued with the din he would be forced to adjourn. As the two sides paid no heed to his pleas, the Chair then adjourned the House at 1440 hrs till Monday. (EDS: pick up suitably from earlier series.) UNI SD RSA SNU 1529
