Rajnath mourns Deogarh stampede victims; announces compensation

New Delhi, Aug 11 (UNI) Condoling the loss of lives in a temple stampede at Deoghar in Jharkhand, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has announced that the Centre would provide Rs 2 lakh each as compensation to the next of the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured. Making a statement in the Lok Sabha on the temple stampede amid uproar by the Opposition, Mr Singh expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of victims. He made the announcement while responding to the issue raised during Zero Hour. Mr Singh said he had spoken to Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das who apprised him of the situation after the tragedy. Earlier, Jai Prakash Yadav of RJD expressed his deep sorrow over the incident and demanded that the government give adequate compensation to the victims and declare the annual Deogarh temple event as a national festival. While Nishikant Dubey of BJP said both the state and the central governments are not paying heed to the demand for building an adequate infrastructure for such a big festival. Rising above political equations, there should be necessary facilities in the area such as airport and hospital near the pilgrimage site, he added. 'No political colouring should be given to the issue," the BJP Member said. At least 11 people were killed and 50 were injured in a stampede at a temple in Jharkhand this morning. The incident took place near a Durga temple at Belabagan More on Deogarh-Jassidih, about 350 kilometres from Ranchi. UNI NY SB CS1424
