Central Sanskrit Universities Bill, 2019gets nod of Parliament

New Delhi, Mar 16 (UNI) A Bill to upgrade three deemed Sanskrit universities into central universities on Monday got the nod of parliament with the Rajya Sabha passing it by voice vote. .
The Rajya Sabha passed the Central Sanskrit Universities Bill, 2019, that aims to upgrade three deemed Sanskrit universities into central universities .
Earlier the bill was passed by Lok Sabha.

The bill was moved in the Upper House Human Resource Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank.

Replying to a discussion on the Bill in the Rajya Sabha, the Human Resource Development Minister said, “The government is committed to develop all 22 Indian languages.”

Mr Nishank also said that Sanskrit is the mother of many languages and it has played an immense contribution in India’s development.
The Bill seeks to upgrade three deemed to be universities in Sanskrit -- Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, Sri Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeeth, and Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeeth Tirupati -- into central universities.

During the debate on the bill, P L Punia of the Congress raised questions about issues pertaining to reservation, teaching staff among others in central universities.

While supporting the Bill, A Navaneethakrishnan of AIADMK urged the minister to visit the Tamil university in Thanjavur, Keezhadi and Adichanallur.

Congress’ L Hanumanthaiah lamented about the condition of the Kannada language and that autonomy has not been granted.
“What is the problem in granting autonomy?,'he asked.

Dr Subramanian Swamy of BJP said those who say Sanskrit is a dead language are themselves intellectually dead.

He read out a paper by NASA that Sanskrit is the best language for artificial intelligence.

He added that 40 per cent of words in Tamil and Sanskrit are common.

Congress’ Chhaya Verma demanded making Sanskrit language compuslory till 12th standard in schools.

“If we want to promote this language, we need to focus in implementing it from from primary level. In Chhatisgarh, there are only 4 universities and the government to increase to 10,” ms Verma added.
