Tripura orders SIT probe in journalist murder

Agartala, Sep 26 (UNI) As expected to divert the attention, the council of ministers of left front government in Tripura today decided to appoint a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the brutal murder of a TV journalist Shantanu Bhowmik (28) on September 20 last in a mysterious circumstance. Information minister Bhanu Lal Saha said that Agartala Press Club had demanded for SIT and the government accepted it and also announced to pay compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the victim family. However, he refused to comment on the demand of nine organisations of working journalists for CBI probe. He however, said the government has not yet decided to the head of SIT and its composition and said, “Police authority will decide the details of SIT. The compensation will be given to the family because his mother is not in a possible to bear the expenses of his younger sister’s higher education outside the state”. When his attention was drawn to the demand for CBI probe or judicial probe by a sitting HC judge raised by journalists and an opposition party, Saha said the government ordered SIT probe after reviewing the progress of the case. “The cabinet was happy over the progress in investigation of the murder case”, he said adding to keep faith on state police’s ability in handling such cases. However, the journalists rejected the government’s decision of SIT and alleged that the left front government deliberately wanted to destroy the evidences and said, “Until CBI probe is ordered we shall not stop. If needs we shall go to highest level seeking justice.” UNI BB AKM
