Queues for cash on ATM, banks are for larger good : PM

Deesa (North Gujarat), Dec 10 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said people queuing up at banks and ATMs after demonetisation were contributing to the larger good of the country. “The older generation in our country leave something for the young and near and dear ones in times of scarcity even if they have to undergo difficulties. They represent our culture of selflessness,” Mr Modi said, addressing a large gathering here. He was here to inaugurate the Banaskantha District Cooperative Dairy’s Rs 350-crore cheese and whey powder plant. The PM also launched A-2 Kankrej breed cow conservation project. Acknowleding the hardship the people were facing after the government scrapped notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denomination, he said people were willing to do so in the larger fight against black money and terrorism. Assuring the people that the situation would begin to normalise after 50 days and eventually be good for them, he said, “Everyone would start noticing and experiencing the difference.” Referring to the logjam in the Parliament over demonetisation, he said the Opposition had brought the situation to such a pass that the President had to virtually plead with them to let the House function. “Though the Government has agreed, the Opposition is not letting me speak in Parliament over the issue and so I have to adopt this route of addressing public meeting,” he said. “No opposition party has asked me even once to roll back the decision of demonetisation. They have problem only with the way it has been implemented," the PM said. “Criticise me as much as you want, in whatever ways you want but prepare people for electronic banking, teach them to use it. This is the time to do this, it is the need of the hour,” he appealed to the opposition. Defending his decision of demonetising Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denomination notes that accounted for 86 percent of country’s cash, Mr Modi said the currency ban had broken the back of Terrorism and Naxalism, weakened individuals involved with fake currency and helped strengthen the hands of the poor of the nation. He called upon people to switch over to electronic form of financial transactions in their daily life. “I urge you all to integrate people with e-banking, e-wallets. There is no need to waste your time standing outside banks or ATMs, e-wallets have brought banks to your mobiles,” he added. Later, in a surprise detour from his scheduled programme, the Prime Minister tweaked the security protocol and went to meet his mother at her Gandhinagar residence. He spent nearly 20-25 minutes with his mother, who lives with his brother at Raysan near Gandhinagar, before reaching BJP state headquarters Kamalam. This is Mr Modi’s first visit to Kamalam after taking over as Prime Minister. He met parliamentarians, legislators and other party leaders in private. It is believed that he discussed party affairs in the state with regard to forthcoming Assembly polls to be held next year. UNI ND PY SNU 1610
