BJP sails through in Manipur Assembly trust vote

BJP sails through in Manipur Assembly trust vote

Imphal, Mar 20 (UNI) The BJP-led coalition government today convincingly won the confidence motion in the Manipur Assembly. The Nongthombam Biren Singh headed dispensation secured 32 votes in the 60-member assembly. The Congress, the single largest party with 27 seats, voted against the motion. The BJP, which had garnered 21 seats in the just-concluded elections, had stitched a coalition with the NPP and NPF (4 members each) besides, one each of the Trinamool Congress, Lok Jana Shakti Party and an Independent. Today's win paves the way for successful establishment of the first BJP government in this north eastern state. Earlier, after the assembly convened, Mr Yumnam Khemchand (54) of BJP was elected the Speaker. A first time entrant to the assembly, Mr Khemchand, a renowned Taekwondo expert, won from Singjamei constituency. The new Speaker adjourned the House after his election. The House reassembled at 1230 hours and the motion of confidence was then moved. A voice vote was done with 32 'Ayes' and 27 'Noes'. Mr Khemchand announced the result amid thumping of tables by the ruling BJP alliance. Governor Dr Najma Heptulla is scheduled to address the Assembly tomorrow. UNI NS PL
