IMD Forecasts Five Days of Wet Spell in Himachal; Cyclone ‘Shakhti’ and Western Disturbances to Impact Region

Shimla, Oct 4 (UNI) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a prolonged spell of inclement weather over Himachal Pradesh from October 5 to 9, driven by the combined impact of severe cyclonic storm “Shakhti” over the northeast Arabian Sea and successive Western Disturbances (WDs) moving across northwestern India.
According to the Meteorological Centre, Shimla, “The severe cyclonic storm ‘Shakhti’ over the northeast Arabian Sea moved westwards with a speed of 18 kmph during the last six hours and lay centered near latitude 22.0°N and longitude 64.5°E, about 470 km west of Dwarka, 470 km west-southwest of Naliya and 420 km southwest of Karachi (Pakistan).” The system is expected to move further west-southwestward till October 5 and then recurve northeastwards from October 6 while gradually weakening.
At the same time, “a Western Disturbance as a trough in the middle tropospheric westerlies with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level runs roughly along longitude 73°E to the north of latitude 29°N,” and “a fresh Western Disturbance is likely to affect northwest India from October 5.”
