Shopian encounter: Militant killed, operation continues

Srinagar, Oct 19 (UNI) A militant was killed by security forces in an encounter, which ensued between militants and security forces during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in south Kashmir district of Shopian on Monday afternoon, a police spokesman said here.
He said the troops of Rashtriya Rifles (RR), CRPF and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police launched a CASO at Melhora village in Shopian this afternoon, following a tip-off about the presence of militants.
However, an encounter ensued after security forces were fired upon by militants when they were moving towards a particular area in the village, he said adding troops also retaliated ensuing in an encounter.
A militant has been killed so far, he said, adding that operation was going on, when the reports last came in.

Additional security forces have been deployed in the adjacent areas to prevent any untoward incident, he said, adding that further details were awaited.
