Srinagar, Aug 3 (UNI) A constable of Jammu and Kashmir police and a civilian were injured when militants opened indiscriminate firing in the down town Srinagar Tuesday evening.
A police spokesman said tonight that at about 1815 hrs, militants fired upon a police party near Sheeraz Chowk, Khanyar, Srinagar.
He said a police constable identified as Abdul Waheed posted at Police Station Khanyar and a civilian Ishtiyaq Ahmad Bazaz, a resident of Nowshera were injured who were immediately shifted to hospital.
The condition of both the injured is stated to be stable, he said.
Senior security forces immediately reached the spot, he said adding a massive search operation has been launched to nab the militants responsible for the attack.
Police have registered a case in this regard under relevant sections of law. Investigation is in progress and officers continue to work to establish the circumstances which lead to this militant crime. Area has been cordoned off and search in the area is going on, he added.
Traffic on the main road was suspended for about an hour after the firing. Shopkeepers closed their shops and people ran for safety.
