Chandigarh, Sep 19 (UNI) Congress on Sunday announced MLA Charanjit Singh Channi as the new Chief Minister of Punjab, a day after miffed Amarinder Singh resigned.
While the Congress MLAs from Punjab had recommended the name of Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa for the top post and party leaders had said his name would be announced shortly. However, hours later, Punjab in-charge Harish Rawat announced Channi's name through Twitter.
"It gives me immense pleasure to announce that Sh. Charanjit Singh Channi has been unanimously elected as the Leader of the Congress Legislature Party of Punjab," Rawat said.
Rawat will meet the Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit, along with Channi and Punjab Congress Chief Navjot Singh Sidhu at 6.30 pm, and hand over the letter of support.
This comes a day after Singh resigned, and said he was feeling humiliated.
