Shanta Kumar welcomes SC stay on UGC rule, says India needs casteless society

Dharamshala, Feb 4 (UNI) Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and former union Minister Shanta Kumar said the Supreme Court has made a very significant observation by staying the new University Grants Commission (UGC) rule, terming it “regressive”.
Welcoming the Supreme Court’s remarks, Shanta Kumar said that India aspires to build a casteless society and any rule that reinforces caste divisions goes against this objective.
Reflecting on history, he said it was a harsh reality that the same society that gifted the world the profound spiritual wisdom of the Vedas and Upanishads later remained enslaved for centuries. The primary reason, he said, was internal division caused by casteism, which weakened society and led to social injustice, including the practice of untouchability.
