He said responding to appeal by doctors and others, a Selection Grade Constable (SgCt) Gayas-ud-Din of Jammu and Kashmir Armed Police 8th Batallion, who himself survived a deadly infection, decided to donate plasma to save another critically ill patient. Gayas donated his plasma on August 26, he said.
A police constable donated B positive plasma on August 23 while a Traffic police Sub Inspector (SI) on Friday donated plasma to save a critically ill woman patient in Srinagar.
Over half-a-dozen personnel of the Jammu and Kashmir have donated plasma so far to save the lives of other COVID positive patients.
However, a Kashmir Administrative Officer (KAS) Tasaduq Jeelani, who was special secretary social welfare department, lost the battle despite receiving plasma from a police officer on July 31.
The SK Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura has set up a helpline to coordinate Plasma donation in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. The helpline has been started in the Department of Blood Transfusion and Immunohematology in the institute, where plasma bank has been established to collect plasma from corona survivors for seriously ill COVID-19 patients.
The plasma donation is sufficient to cure two patients suffering from this disease and the donated plasma can be stored for a year safely as the frozen plasma is said to retain the needed antibodies. This therapy shows promises to reduce deaths on account of the coronavirus disease.
