Lucknow, Oct 2 (UNI) Mahatma Gandhi’s 152nd birth anniversary was celebrated at the Sulabh International campus here on Saturday.
The event saw the organising of a lecture on Bapu’s contribution towards society’s development.
The speakers focussed on the contribution of Mahatma Gandhi on sanitation and for the improvement of socio-economic conditions of Dalits and other weaker sections of the society.
Eminent Sociologist, Prof S Tripathi delivered a talk on Gandhi as a crusader of Dalits and human rights.
"Gandhi ji had involved the civil society and non-government organizations for improving the social condition of the deprived sections of society," he said.
Dr Tripathi said Mahatma Gandhi is considered the Masiha of Dalits and brought scavengers into the main stream of society and trained the workers for abolishing untouchability.
He said that Dr Bindeshwar Pathak, founder of Sulabh Sanitation Movement has adopted the Gandhian thought and philosophy for reliving the manual scavengers involved in manual cleaning of toilets.

Prof Tripathi said that Gandhi himself cleaned the toilet and asked the volunteers to participate in the sanitation drive by cleaning toilets in the Ashram. This tradition was followed by Sulabh Sanitation Movement and it constructed 10,000 toilets for improving the environment and quality of life of the people.
Fateh Bahadur Singh, Honorary Controller of Sulabh International Social Service Organisation, UP welcomed the guests and volunteers on the occasion.
