Chandigarh, Jan 8 (UNI) In a direct contest, BJP defeated AAP to win Mayoral polls in Chandigarh Municipal Corporation on Saturday.
A total 28 votes were polled as the Congress (7) and lone SAD councillor abstained from voting.
In the 35-member House, AAP has 14 members, BJP 13, including Harpreet Kaur Babla, who switched over to the BJP, Congress 7 and Shiromani Akali Dal has one member besides one vote of local BJP MP Kirron Kher.
BJP councillor Sarabjit Kaur was elected the Chandigarh Mayor. She received 14 votes while her nearest rival AAP's rival Anju Katyal garnered 13 votes and one vote was deemed invalid.
BJP nominee Dalip Sharma won the senior deputy mayor poll as he polled 15 votes against his AAP rival Prem Lata's 13 votes.
Anup Gupta of BJP defeated Ram Chander Yadav (AAP) through a draw of lots for Deputy Mayor post.
After the counting, the AAP councillors created a ruckus, alleging that the BJP had been favoured in the counting process. The BJP councillors surrounded the chair of Mayor when the AAP councillors tried to stop the new mayor from addressing the House. Later, marshals were called and they removed the councillors.
