Punjab to Launch AI-powered Special unit for GST Enforcement

Chandigarh, Aug 4 (UNI) Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema today announced the establishment of a State-Level Special Fraud Detection Unit (SFDU) in Patiala to strengthen GST enforcement. The unit will use advanced technologies like AI and data analytics to detect high-value GST frauds, including circular trading, benami transactions, and fake invoicing.
The SFDU, comprising experienced tax officers, IT professionals, a Chartered Accountant, and a legal officer, will have real-time access to critical datasets like GSTN, e-way bills, and RFID analytics. Empowered under CGST/PGST Acts and IPC provisions, the unit will target suspicious GSTINs, block wrongful Input Tax Credit claims, and pursue prosecutions.
Cheema emphasized that the SFDU will balance strict enforcement with taxpayer facilitation, protecting honest taxpayers while cracking down on evasion. The initiative reflects the AAP-led Punjab government’s commitment to transparent, accountable tax administration, safeguarding state revenue, and fostering economic stability.
