With GST and demonetisation in mind, BJP issues whips for MPs

New Delhi, Dec 2 (UNI) The BJP today exuded confidence that notwithstanding differences between the Government and the Opposition parties that led to collapse of proceedings in Parliament during last three weeks, there would be possibly some "breakthrough" next week. "We think Parliament will function normally next week," a party leader said. The Government floor managers are also reaching out to NDA allies especially the Shiv Sena to give push for the passage of three Goods and Services Tax (GST) enabling Bills. The BJP issued whips directing party MPs to be present in both the Houses, sources said here today. The winter session of Parliament that commenced on November 16 was initially considered to have early passage of Central GST and related Integrated GST legislation as the chief priority. Normally, the winter session used to begin only in the third week of November but the session was advanced to November 16 this year ostensibly only to pass the key GST-related bills. In the winter session, Parliament, according to the Government's agenda, was also likely to take up at least 15 new Bills, sources had said. The Central Government is also expected to push for passage of the ordinance which seeks to amend the Enemy Property Act. The ordinance to amend the nearly 50-year-old Enemy Property Law was promulgated more than once. The Enemy Property (Amendment and Validation) Bill, 2016 seeks to guard against claims of succession or transfer of properties left by people who migrated to Pakistan after wars. The Government had earlier set April 1, 2017 as the deadline to migrate country's economy and trading system to the new tax regime (GST). On the vexed currency ban issue, the ruling party feels that other than Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress, most parties in Lok Sabha would support a resolution that would "welcome demonetisation drive as a good objective". According to BJP leaders, Trinamool is against any such resolution. Meanwhile, Trinamool sources said another key regional outfit AIADMK of Tamil Nadu would also support Trinamool in opposing the demonetisation scheme "lock, stock and barrel". "A section of BJP leaders and floor managers are insisting that the motion or the draft note for a resolution should say this House in principle supports demonetisation," a source said. The BJP leaders, however, said Ms Banerjee is indulging "in negative politics" and indulging in "wild allegations" by making baseless charges against Indian Army. "There is a new line...my life is under threat. A plane delayed, it is her life. And then comes army patrol at toll plaza. It's all publicity game," another BJP leader said. "Defence Minister Manohor Parrikar has rightly put in the Lok Sabha that Trinamool behaviour was both shocking and only reflected political frustration," he said on the condition of anonymity. Meanwhile, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said in a tweet: "Accusing Central Govt. of a Military Coup against a State Govt, Mamata Didi @MamataOfficial, this is height of Schizophrenia". BJP's official Twitter account said in a posting, "Saddening that a routine exercise by the Army has been turned into a controversy by West Bengal CM." Babul Supriyo, Union Minister and a BJP MP from Asansol in his tweet said, "Army stopping trucks to EXTORT money from them" --- Says Mamata Banerjee, Honble CM of Bengal !!! How low can politics go !!!!" Ms Banerjee, who has been steadfastly opposing currency ban, is also likely to visit Gujarat as part of her nationwide campaign against Prime Minister Narendra Modi's policies. During her visit to the western state, she is also likely to interact with Hardik Patel, the convener of the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti, Trinamool sources said. UNI DEVN SW SNU 1727
