New Delhi, Feb 26 (UNI) Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar here on Monday said the aim of education is to bring out a good human being out of the system and students are not just data banks who will mug up the things for examination purpose only.
The Minister’s statement came in the backdrop of the announcement of cutting down the NCERT syllabus by half or to reduce the portions which are no more relevant in today’s time.
“A student needs to indulge in physical education, life skill education, inculcate value education and experimental learning. These activities are absent today; a student has no time for it. We are only producing exam giving students; they learn and mug up the lessons,” said the HRD minister and adds that this was the basic reform the school education sector was waiting for long.
“NCERT has been told to evaluate the present curriculum,” he stated.
"The idea to have quality education in the country emerged predominantly from the six workshops held by the ministry. In those sessions, more than 200 NGOs working in the field of education, many educational experts, as well headmasters and many teachers participated. Today the syllabus is so cramped that there is no time left for students to indulge in these activities. Plenty of information is not education," the Minister informed.
He added that the idea to reduce the burden is to make students learn the basic principles of various subjects, teach them how to interpret and analyse for overall personality development.
"We have invited suggestions from teachers, educational experts, NGOs, all stakeholders and also parents can participate," he added.
After two months, he will review the suggestions and take definite measures to reduce the syllabus.
