Sense of nationalism emerged across country, people supported Govt on Kashmir, says BJP

New Delhi, Oct 1 (UNI) BJP said on Tuesday that with the abrogation of Article 370 from Kashmir, a

nationwide sense of nationalism has emerged and people from all sections of the country with one voice not only supported the decision but also praised it.

Addressing reporters at the party headquarters here, Union ministers Dharmendra Pradhan and Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said the decision of revoking (provisions under) Article 370 was a historic decision and it was one of the few moments in the history of Independent India that united people across the country.

'Jan jagran' (mass contact )programmes were held during the month of September across the country to highlight the significance of the government’s decision to scrap the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, he said.



Mr Shekhawat said out of the 370 programmes at tier-two cities announced, 350 were held at fixed places across the country, and adding other 250 -- in all 600 such awareness campaigns were held.

All classes of the society supported and praised the decision taken by the government, he said.

Of the 35 campaigns at big cities, 34 were completed and the programme at Imphal could not be held because of bad weather, he said, adding that the campaigns were successfully completed.

The campaign highlighted the significance of the government’s decision to scrap the special status and privileges Jammu and Kashmir enjoyed under Articles 370 and 35A.

People supported this step of removing Article 370 from Kashmir and the country unitedly stood with the decision of the government and this has been major achievement of this public awareness campaign, said Mr Pradhan.

Exhibitions were held in the programmes and videos were shown on how Kashmiris suffered for three decades of violence, Mr Shekhawat said, adding that the mistake committed years ago, was corrected now.

Mr Pradhan insisted that neutral and eminent persons participated in the programme including Rahul Dravid, Milkha Singh, cricketer Yuvraj Singh, chairperson of the Infosys Foundation and member of public health care initiatives of the Gates Foundation Sudha Murthy and Indu Bhushan Sinha, nephrologist and medical academic.

Chief Ministers, Union Ministers including Rajnath Singh and Nitin Gadkari, and senior leaders met 5 lakh opinion makers, he maintained.

'The takeaway of this campaign was the amazing support and blessing received from the people of the country,' Mr Pradhan said, adding that this has strengthened the trust of the government.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi received worldwide support and appreciation, Mr Pradhan said in reference to Mr Modi's recent visit to the US.
